LEARN ABOUT OUR FIRST Q-LAB: DAVÓNE TINES: QUEERING THE MASS
In Queering the Mass, Davóne Tines, a featured artist with The Metropolitan Opera and Artist-In-Residence at Brooklyn’s Academy Of Music queers the catholic mass by transforming it into a non-denominational structure for dealing with human problems. About the program, The New Yorker stated, “In a matter of minutes, we had traversed multiple centuries and worlds, yet all the music was filtered through the taut resonance of one voice: a timbre at once grand and fraught, potent and vulnerable.”
Davóne Tines is a pathbreaking artist whose work encompasses a diverse repertoire, ranging from early music to new commissions by leading composers, while exploring the social issues of today.
A creator, curator, and performer at the intersection of many histories, cultures, and aesthetics, he is engaged in work that blends opera, art song, spirituals, contemporary classical, gospel, and protest songs as a means to tell a deeply personal story of perseverance connecting to all of humanity.
