Music for cello and piano benefits greatly from performances on historical instruments. The modern piano is just too loud to balance properly with the cello; it drowns out the stringed instrument. The sound of the “fortepiano” is transparent and allows to cello to be heard, as a proper partner. Cellist Tanya Tomkins, a soloist with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, has performed at the Concertgebouw and Lincoln Center. Fortepianist Jeffrey LaDeur is a well-regarded soloist.
