20th C. British Masters

Presented by California Bach Society

Paul Flight leads the California Bach Society in British masterpieces from the early 20th century. Ralph Vaughan Williams’s (1872-1958) beautiful Mass in G minor is written in a modal style that evokes Tallis and Byrd. His juxtaposition of chant and choral antiphony makes the old sound new, much like his Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. Herbert Howells’s (1892-1983) sublime Requiem employs impressionistic sonorities to achieve its overwhelming emotional effect. We close the program with the double choir Nunc Dimittis by Gustav Holst (1874-1934), to whom Vaughan Williams had dedicated his Mass in 1922. The 30-voice choir is joined by fine soloists: soprano Victoria Fraser, tenor Julian Kusnadi, and bass Clayton Moser.
