In Berkeley on their second US tour, Juan Villarreal and Patricio "Pato" Crom take us on a trip to Buenos Aires with fresh interpretations of classic tangos on guitar, one of the original instruments of the genre. As a singer, Juan connects with the dancers with heartfelt emotion.
This event is a milonga (tango social dance). Everyone is welcome to dance or listen. Beer, wine, and empanadas are offered for sale. All ages welcome.
Social dancers themselves, Juan & Patricio have a special gift for taking their two guitars and voice and creating music that is "100% MILONGUERÍSIMO BAILABLE" (100% super milonga-appropriate danceable music). They craft exquisitely danceable sets from their six albums, especially from their last two: D’Arienzo en Guitarras (2022) and Moderno Trovador (2023).
Juan and Patricio met on stage at the Milonga del Moran in 2010 in Buenos Aires. Patricio had come to play with his quintet “Malo Conocido,” and Juan was there to sing as a guest with Hernán “Cucuza” Castiello. From that meeting the Duo Villarreal-Crom was born, and the musicians started a long journey, performing at festivals, milongas and concert halls in Buenos Aires, and also in various countries of South America and Europe.
"Our guitars brought us together more than a decade ago, and we swore loyalty to them . . . For us, the duo is a way of life." --Juan Villarreal and Patricio Crom
