The San Francisco Lyric Chorus invites singers to join us for our Summer 2018 Season, Song of the Universal. We will sing American composer John Corigliano’s Fern Hill, a setting of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ reminiscences of his childhood visit to his aunt’s farm, and his musings on his own life. Fern Hill is one of the most important American choral works of the 20th century. We also will sing two works by Eric Whitacre, one of America’s most popular contemporary composers: Five Hebrew Love Songs and This Marriage. In Five Hebrew Love Songs, Whitacre sets Hebrew poetry written by his wife, operatic soprano Hila Plitmann. This Marriage is an a cappella setting of a Rumi text about marriage, a gift from Whitacre to his wife. In addition, we’ll sing two works by contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, Luminous Night of the Soul and Song of the Universal. In Luminous Night of the Soul, Gjeilo collaborates with American poet Charles Silvestri on a poem about the spirit that inspires all art. Gjeilo turns to a Walt Whitman text that speaks of all humanity and the universal spirit in Song of the Universal. We will be accompanied by piano and strings.
