Membership in Cantare's 24-voice Chamber Ensemble is by audition. Auditions are conducted by Artistic Director David Morales and are held in the summer, prior to the beginning of the annual season in early September. Previous choral experience and strong reading skills are essential.
Auditions are used to determine vocal timbre, range, vocal flexibility, and musicianship skills. Those auditioning will be asked to vocalize, sing a brief solo of their choosing (aria, art or folk song, show tune, etc.) and sight-read various choral selections provided.
Chamber Ensemble singers commit to singing the entire annual season. The season includes four independent concert programs plus participating in the final Chorale concert, performing selections on their own. The Chamber Ensemble rehearses on Monday evenings from 7:15-9:30pm in Lafayette.
Please e-mail David Morales at [email protected], or call Cantare's office at (510) 836-0789 to schedule an audition or for additional information.

In 2017-18 Season “Appear and Inspire”, the Chamber Ensemble will perform three very diverse concerts. In mid-November they will begin their season with Copland’s In the Beginning, Debussy’s Trois Chansons, Duruflé’s Four Motets along with selections by Moses Hogan. In February, they will offer their highly popular Dessert Concert program, You Make Me Feel So Young, which consists of classic love songs from the Great American Songbook and popular songs from the last 100 years. In late April, they will sing a variety of international works including Four Japanese Folk Songs arranged by Takemitsu, Gjeilo’s Contrition, Tae Kyun Ham’s Kashiri, Rautavaara’s Suite de Lorca and selections made popular by the Beatles.
In December, they will perform with the Chorale and Children’s choirs in Cantare’s festive Holiday Concert. In May, they will close Cantare’s season by again performing with Cantare’s other choirs in a concert of American Music titled A Jubilant Song.
