Conductor Yuri Temirkanov may be as well known in the U.S. for his successful term as music director of the Baltimore Symphony as for his extraordinary record of accomplishment with his hometown orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
If you think that the peripatetic Valery Gergiev is the main musical force in that city, guess again. The 73-year-old Temirkanov has a depth of understanding of the Russian repertory that is unsurpassed, at least among the living.
He's bringing his excellent orchestra to Davies Symphony Hall, where he will conduct Alisa Weilerstein in Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1, along with Rimsky-Korsakov and Brahms.
