Rothko Chapel Comes to Berkeley

It's rare that we give a shout out to the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus in this space, but they're a really good group. (After all, take 45,000 students and winnow that down to the best 30 singers plus a few ringers, and you get quality.) And this weekend the chorus, directed by Marika Kuzman, performs in Oakland's relatively new Cathedral of Christ the Light. On the program is Morton Feldman's deep, meditative work Rothko Chapel, a reason to attend by itself. Come early and, for five bucks you can have a tour of the cathedral.

Or just sink in for more choral works: There's Robert Ashley's She Was a Visitor and Roscoe Mitchell’s monument for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Bells for New Orleans. The William Winant Percussion Group will perform Lou Harrison’s gamelan composition Threnody for Carlos Chávez.
