When the New Esterhazy Quartet took on their present “Haydn and His Students” sequel to their presentation of the complete Haydn quartets, we all knew that eventually they would set upon Haydn’s most famous pupil, Beethoven. Now that day has come, but the NEQ is changing things up a little by choosing one of Haydn’s Op. 17 quartets (from 1771) and Beethoven’s Op. 130 (1825) two quartets separated by 54 years and the incredible stylistic experimentation of Beethoven’s late style. It’s a fascinating way to mull over the teacher-student relationship, and it will be great to see these fantastic period instrumentalists dig into Beethoven’s masterpiece.
