San Francisco Choral Society is run by wizard chorus master Robert Geary, who directs a wide array of Bay Area chorus projects. The Choral Society is the traditional, community-based organization in his schedule, and it has everything you need in one of these groups: a large, energetic roster; some strong and loud outstanding voices (and perhaps a few ringers) to carry a section through difficult parts; a professional orchestra; and music instruction, so that individual singers can get what they need and practice enough to sound good.
And it has Geary, who always manages to inject drama, and even subtlety into the group’s productions.
The Choral Society’s performances of choral masterworks are always recommendable, so if you’re hankering for more Handel, or you missed last weekend’s Alexander’s Feast, look no further than Israel in Egypt, this weekend at Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco.
