Handel's Apollo & Dafne; Bach Arias

For its final regular season concert, American Bach Soloists will present Handel’s dramatic cantata Apollo e Dafne (1709-1710). Approaching age 25, Handel was (incredibly) past his operatic apprenticeship, with four under his belt, including Agrippina, which is a pretty good one. But Apollo is really the gateway, filled with brilliant musical ideas: A year later came Rinaldo in London, and Handel was off and running on a luminous career in opera. Not as often performed as you might think, Apollo e Dafne is absolutely riveting in a good performance. And, at 40 minutes, it’s, like, less than one quarter the length of many Handel operas.
