The Calder Quartet, which formed at the Thornton School at
USC and then continued training at Colburn School in Los Angeles, has been seen
frequently in the Bay Area over the past few years. And their visits are always
welcome, so it bodes well for the Art and Migration festival put on by UC Davis
Arts and Humanities Institute, the Music and Theater Departments, and the
Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, that the Calder is taking a major role.
The group has a close relationship with several contemporary composers,
including Thomas Ades and Terry Riley, but the music they’ll be performing this
trip is by composers designated as Fellows of the Art and Migration festival,
including the fairly well-known Lei Liang. Folks in the area of the Mondavi
Center should not miss the chance to hear this premier new music quartet.
