Deadline approaching: The Marin Music Chest, which

February 9 at First Congregational Church of Berkeley: Young People’s Symphony Orchestra Winter Concert. On the program: Brahms’ Double; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. Amos Yang, from the S.F. Symphony, does the solo honors on cello. Along with 95 young musicians, ages 12 to 21, conducted by David Ramadanoff.

We’re adding a new feature to the Kids Around the Bay column, in which we report on what’s going on in the schools. It’s an effort to give parents a close look at the resources and philosophy that different schools offer. We begin with the San Francisco Waldorf School and a chat with David Weber, a humanities and music teacher in the Waldorf High School.

The Marin Music Chest provided grants totaling $11,250 to four Marin music organizations at the end of last year.

It's certain that there will be "how come you didn't know that?!" and "that's nothing compared to X or Y" mail deluge, but it's yet another of many well-known (to others) facts that strikes me as a matter of interest, news even.

I admire much of Lotfi Mansouri's work as Toronto and San Francisco Opera general director (especially his leadership during the War Memorial reconstruction), but he is not my favorite writer.

Tenors historically have been in short supply, so the scene at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Thursday evening was a big surprise: five (5) talented tenors led the way at the Voice Department recital.
