Catch a rare opportunity to hear two of the greatest living proponents of eight-string wizardry perform in the intimate, candle-lit sanctuary of the historic San Francisco Swedenborgian Church on Aug. 19.
Former Bay Area denizen Mike Marshall is well known to locals as a pioneering multi-instrumentalist in the vanguard of the “New Acoustic” scene for over 40 years. He first gained prominence through his work with the seminal David Grisman Quintet and as founding member of the Modern Mandolin Quartet. He also recorded and toured extensively with Montreux, Psychograss, and the Anger-Marshall Band. Marshall is a fluid interpreter and improviser in a range of idioms from bluegrass to jazz to classical music, and is equally versatile on mandolin, guitar, mandocello, and violin. He seamlessly blends his American roots background with a profound understanding of European classical music, Brazilian choro, and music from around the world.
The duo has release two CDs on the Adventure Music label, have performed at the Carmel Bach Festival, The Savannah Music Festival, the Bach Haus Leipzig, Germany and the Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival in Colorado, and have been soloists with the New Century Chamber Orchestra under Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and Orchester l’arte del mondo from Cologne, Germany.
Please note that although the performance on the 19th is on the third Sunday of August, the event is part of the “Second Sundays” Concert Series. Tickets are available online from Brown Paper Tickets, or at the door, as available. The venue holds just 100 attendees. The Swedenborgian Church is located at 2107 Lyon Street in San Francisco, at the corner of Washington Street.
