Tabla master Zakir Hussain, now serving this year as SFJAZZ's resident rartistic director, will headline two events this Saturday: a family matinee at 11 a.m., Sounds of India, in SFJAZZ's Miner Auditorium, and then at 12:15 p.m., a family workshop in the Joe Henderson Lab.
The latter event in the lab is free to ticket holders to Sounds of India, but because of the venue's small size, reservations are necessary, available in the morning of the workshop on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up at the SFJAZZ Education table in the lobby, beginning at 10 a.m.
At the workshop, Hussain will be joined by Orff music expert and educator Doug Goodkin, Sam Heminger, Joshi Marshall, and Micah McClean. Tickets for Sounds of India are $15 for adults and $5 for youth. Says SFJAZZ: "Bring the kids, the neighbor's kids, and the grandkids!"
Hussain will be in residence at SFJAZZ Oct. 9-12, see the website for other events featuring him.
