In surveying classical music available on radio, TV, HD casts in theater, and web streamings, I have found some special treats in the near future. The Bavarian State Opera's quirky, live HD casts continue today with Robert Carsen’s production of Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, conducted by Kirill Petrenko, with Amber Wagner in the title role, and also featuring Alice Coote, Brenda Rae, and Peter Seiffert.
Carsen was responsible for the San Francisco Opera's grand production of Boito's Mefistofele, and as it happens that opera is next up on the Munich live HD cast, on Nov. 15, beginning at 11 a.m. PST (the switch to Standard Time comes on Nov. 1). Roland Schwab's production features Kristine Opolais, René Pape and Joseph Calleja; Omer Meir Wellber conducts.
Symphony and opera meet fortuitously as Andris Nelsons conducts the Boston Symphony in a concert production of Richard Strauss' Elektra, with Christine Goerke in the title role, the cast including Gun-Brit Barkmin (Chrysothemis), Jane Henschel (Klytämnestra), and James Rutherford (Orest). The performance earlier this week remains on the WGBH website.
Two recent San Francisco musical sensations are available on radio and by streaming: last week's acclaimed San Francisco Symphony concerts with Susanna Malkki and Christian Tetzlaff will be broadast on KDFC-FM 90.3, KDFC.com, at 8 p.m., Oct. 27, remaining available for three weeks. Mälkki's concerts this week have Sibelius' Symphony No. 5 on the program, and Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, with Simon Trpceski as soloist.
San Francisco Opera's summer sensation, Berlioz's Les Troyens, can be heard at 10 a.m., Oct. 31, on WFMT.com, and at 7 p.m., Nov. 1, on KDFC-FM 90.3, KDFC.com.
Among Medici.TV's many offerings -- including free ones -- a special event can be seen beginning at 11 a.m., Oct. 24 (and remaining available for 90 days): the 10th anniversary concert marking the reopening of the Dresden Frauenkirche. With the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra playing in the church, along with cellist Jan Vogler and violinist Mira Wang.
