The Marin Headlands Center for the Arts has awarded 51 residential grants to artists from 11 countries and 10 U.S. states in disciplines including dance, music, sound, visual, film, video, new media, writing, performance, architecture, and environment.
Grant winners take up residence berths at the Headlands campus, located on the "briny, beautiful yet often moody coast," just north of San Francisco.
New residents include New York-based choreographer Miguel Gutierrez; writer and Emmy-nominated television producer Veena Sud; South African photographer and filmmaker Pieter Hugo; New York Times dance critic Claudia LaRocco.
In addition to 891 applicants for the Artist in Residency positions, another 70 applied to Headlands’ Alumni program. Artists take up residence in three shifts over the year: spring, summer, and fall.
Artists in Residence are free to pursue the creative projects of their choice. Many use aspects of the Headlands itself to create either site-specific work, or work directly related to the surroundings.
Sweden’s Mikael Lindahl, whose practice is concerned with transmitting interpretations of nature through film and the investigation of scientific display, intends to spend his time diving and filming the local Pacific fauna and flora and become in his words, "an underwater flaneur."
La Rocco describes her plans in terms of fleshing out strategies for a series of long-term interdisciplinary collaborations, creating a site-specific pop-up of her normally New York-based Performance Club series, and "time spent drawing the kind of inspiration for the myriad of other projects that can only be achieved through sitting by the Pacific and thinking about Robert Creely."
Among musician residents: Phillip Greenlief and Sara Kraft, from California; Adrienn Hód and Csaba Molnár, from Hungary; Jessie Marino, from New York. Open houses are scheduled for April 28, July 21, and Oct. 27.
