The Guardian reports on the opening of a new exhibition at the Handel museum in Mayfair, London, the site of adjacent homes of both George Frideric Handel and rock legend Jimi Hendrix. The composer scribed much of his best-known work —including The Messiah — in the narrow Georgian house where he dwelled for 40 years and where he died in 1759. Jimi Hendrix and his girlfriend made their home in the attic flat next door from 1968 to 1969, just before his death on September 18. Hendrix was apparently thrilled when he learned of the coincidence, and some listeners claim to hear the influence of Handel in Hendrix’s subsequent work. The space he occupied is now part of the Handel museum. The exhibition, “Handel & Hendrix in London,” will run from August to November, with extensive memorabilia, photos, and film stock honoring the iconic guitarist.
