Photographer Christopher Payne visited the Steinway & Sons factory in Queens some 50 times to document the 12,000 components and countless processes that go into assembling a world-class piano. The result is Making Steinway, a beautiful selection of his frameworthy photographs. With his trained-architect’s eye for technical details and his keen appreciation for the value of meticulous craftsmanship, he offers an impressive glimpse of the magic involved in transforming wood and metal into precision musical instruments — and of the people who make that magic.
