Trifonov: Playing Glazunov, not Tchaikovsky

Don't forget to check the Proms schedule often. Today, the 11 a.m. (Pacific Time) concerts from the Royal Albert Hall offer Valery Gergiev conducting the London Symphony in the Ravel-Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition, Daniil Trifonov as the soloist in Glazunov’s Second Piano Concerto (what a refreshing change from Tchaikovsky!), and the U.K. premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s The Rider on the White Horse.

Aug. 14, it's Janácek, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky, conducted by Kirill Karabits, with Sunwook Kim as the soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3. On Thursday, Charles Dutoit conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a trio of cellists in Penderecki’s Concerto grosso; Stravinsky's miniature Fireworks, Debussy's La mer, and music from Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé complete the program.

Aug. 17, Marin Alsop conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Schumann's Tragic Overture and Symphony No. 4, then Brahms' A German Requiem, with soprano Rachel Harnisch and baritone Henk Neven.
