June 8, Saturday, Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, Berkeley 11:00 a.m.: Singer/Songwriter José-Luis Orozco. You may not be aware of Orozco, who’s well known in Latino households around the nation, but he’s responsible for 13 (and counting) CDs of Latin-American children’s music, as well as three books. That makes him a veteran entertainer, and because he and his show are bilingual, there’s an opportunity to expose children to Spanish language and culture in a fun and lighthearted way.
June 8-10, Saturday-Sunday, Golden Gate Park bandshell, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Golden Gate Park Band Festival. Summer festival season is just getting underway: This weekend’s choice is the band festival in Golden Gate Park. With good weather, the scene will be great, and you can drop in whenever you like to hear one of the 12 bands on the weekend schedule. The bands come from all over: Modesto, Sutter’s Creek, Daly City, Fremont, and everywhere in between. The hosting Golden Gate Park Band itself plays on Sunday, from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. There will probably be lots of variety in the music, too, most of it great for kids.
June 7, Friday, San Francisco City Hall, noon, and June 8, Saturday, Legion of Honor Museum, 8 p.m.: Ethnic Dance Festival. This always-exciting festival gets off to a rocking start with Ballet Folklórico Netzahualcoyotl from Mexico and San Francisco’s own Afro-Brazilian troupe, Fogo na Roupa. The costumes are colorful, the funky samba-reggae is irresistible. On Sunday, the more adult-oriented, but stunningly beautiful choreography of Charya Burt Cambodian Dance takes center stage.
